Dietitians with the APD credential (Accredited Practising Dietitian) are the only nutrition professionals recognised by the Australian Government to provide services under Medicare and Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). All dietitians are university trained for a minimum of 4 years. APD dietitians are required to participate in ongoing professional development to keep their knowledge and skills in line with best practice evidence. All APDs are registered with the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA).

Dietitians are qualified to provide personalised clinical assessments and care plans to meet the needs of individuals and can also call themselves nutritionists. Not all nutritionists possess the qualifications to use the title “dietitian”.
